Can Thyroid Cancer be Inherited? Patients Forum in Toronto, May 30, 2009

Most thyroid cancer patients have been told by their doctors that the differentiated forms of the disease are not inherited. Yet at Thry'vors we have a fairly high proportion of members who have first-degree family members with papillary or follicular disease including siblings, parent & child, and a few with three generations with the disease.

Recently, several research studies looking at the familial and genetic aspects of thyroid cancer have increased the knowledge of the inheritability of the disease. One study performed at the London Health Sciences Centre has produced a database of patients and their family members with the disease, and has found that there is a greater than chance number of family members with the disease. Dr. Tom McDonald will speak to our group about this study at a Patients Forum in Toronto on May 30, 2009.

As well at the same event, Dr. Shereen Ezzat will address the group about new research in the area of genetic studies. Some exciting and interesting findings have been made in this evolving field.

This public patients' forum will look at these studies and open the discussion to questions from the audience. Please join us. View the details on the flyer (click here) and register at thryvors@sympatico.ca or at 416-487-8267

New From Thry'vors: 4-T4 Pill Reminder Disc

Thry'vors is pleased to announce that we are now offering a new tool to help thyroid cancer survivors.

Whether you've just started to take thyroid replacement medication or if you've been taking it for years, you may be among the 4 out of 5 thyroid cancer patients who say that they sometimes forget to take their thyroid replacement.

Thry'vors has been paying attention to this concern and we are delighted to introduce the Thry'vors 4-T4 Pill Reminder Disc.

The Thry'vors 4-T4 is a slim, circular 14-day dispenser that indicates the day of the week for each pill. Measuring 6.5 cm in diameter, it is a handy way to remind you to take your medication and to keep track of the medication that you've taken. It can be especially helpful if your endocrinologist has prescribed alternating or varying dosages over the course of a week.

If you, or someone you know, would find the Thry'vors 4-T4 Pill Reminder Disc helpful, click here to download an order form.
