PRESS RELEASEThyroid Cancer -- Growing in IncidenceCanadians' awareness of thyroid cancer needs to be improved, says the Canadian Thyroid Cancer Support Group (Thry'vors). Thyroid cancer is once again the number one cancer -- in regards to rise in incidence in Canada (with an increase of over 5% annually) according to the annual Canadian Cancer Statistics report released today. It is the fifth most prevalent cancer, and the most common cancer among young women. While some of the rate of increase can be explained by better detection of small tumours, this increase is a world-wide phenomenon that requires the attention that other cancers garner in terms of research and patient support. Thry'vors -- a volunteer-run organization made up of Canadian thyroid cancer survivors, provides information resources and support to individuals diagnosed with thyroid cancer. "We have been seeing a steady increase in the number of new members joining our listserv and requesting our publications. We know that it is not only because more people are learning about our support group, it's also because more and more people are being diagnosed with thyroid cancer", says Rita Banach, the president of Thry'vors. Although the thyroid cancer survival rate is relatively good compared to other forms of cancer, especially when detected early, thyroid cancer patients and survivors face a lifetime of monitoring and follow-up as the recurrence rate may be as high as 20%. "The Canadian Cancer Society's annual report released today gives us a 'heads up' on what sort of increase in demand we can expect for our support services and especially for the publications that we produce and distribute to individuals and clinicians across Canada, and even in the U.S.", adds Grace Wright of Thry'vors.
